What comes into view as a result of this work is not a person’s ‘authentic
self’. The person is not seen as a private self standing outside of
culture. But as ‘truths’ are rendered visible they can be held more tentatively.
Through this process, other ways of living - including those that are derived
locally and in community - come into view. The human landscape is altered
to one informed by variety. A person has less a sense of ‘the right thing to do’
and more an awareness of what it is they value.
I detest a man who knows that he knows.
- Oliver Wendell Holmes
